The Pushkar Camel Fair is also famous as Pushkar Mela, one of the most striking and authentic events in Indian culture. Annually held at the holy city of Pushkar, it falls in the month of Kartik in the Hindu lunar calendar. It transformed from a bustling animal market to a deep tapestry of spirituality, culture and art. Here’s a five-day tour plan that combines to immerse travellers into the very heart of the spectacle: an opportunity to explore the animal trade and the sacred atmosphere around Pushkar Lake and its Brahma Mandir.
Day 1: Pushkar Arrival
Upon arrival at Jaipur International Airport or Ajmer Railway Station, you will be received by our tour representative and whisked off to Pushkar. A wide range of stay options is available in the proximity to the fair site or the main town, ranging from tented camps in luxury to heritage hotels, blending traditional Rajasthani charm with modern comfort, turning the desert into a cozy sanctuary. Afterwards, in the afternoon, you are free for a bite to eat and a quick stroll around the camp. Later, dinner features authentic Rajasthani cuisine, complemented by an optional cultural performance to get you in the right frame of mind for the days to come. A preliminary briefing on the fair logistics, best photography, and etiquette is conducted to help you dive deep into the fair.
Day 2: Pushkar Fair
The group is further assisted to reach the large fairgrounds directly after an early breakfast. Thousands of camels, horses, and livestock change hands in the morning spent at the cattle market, the fair attracts the occasion in bright fabrics and silver jewellery. It’s a great chance for photography, the rustic beauty of desert traders and the Rabari tribe while haggling over the prices. Be ready for some energetic sports events like camel and horse races, and for bizarre competitions, like the “Longest Moustache.” The afternoon is spent exploring the stalls – jewellery, textiles, farming tools, leather goods, and more. The fair emerges as a huge, temporary flea market that sustains local life and culture.
Day 3: Pushkar Fair & Activities
The morning digs deeper into the handicraft mart, letting travellers meet weavers, potters, and jewellers, learn about their crafts, and perhaps pick up unique mementoes. The daily competitions connecting the fairgrounds range from Turban tying to tug-of-war, and offer fun and achievement. A large portion of the afternoon is reserved for exploring Pushkar itself.
Pushkar is one of the oldest towns in India, famous for its holy lake enclosed by 52 ghats. Walking along the ghats, attending puja, and observing the pilgrims’ reverence is a contrast to the hustle and bustle of the fair outside. In the evening, a beautiful Aarti ceremony on the main ghat is performed on the water, creating a powerful visual and spiritual moment. The day closes with respect for the duality of the Mela: an unlikely place of spiritual sanctity and earthly commerce, quietly coexisting.
Day 4: Pushkar Fair & Desert Adventures
In the morning, make a final tour of browsing the fairground or shopping. The real highlight of the day is Desert Adventures – an escorted camel safari across nearby dunes, which offer a tranquil counterpoint to the crowd, showing a panoramic view of sunset. It offers a glimpse of how local communities live when the fair isn’t in full swing and helps place what they have witnessed in a broader perspective of rural Rajasthan. The evening ends with a Gala Dinner at the camp, sometimes under the stars, with a grand cultural program. The night serves as a communal reflection on the trip: sights of the camel bazaar, the quiet glow of a desert night and the spirituality of the Aarti.
Day 5: Departure
The last morning is spent in equal parts between nostalgia and last-minute shopping or an early morning walk through the quiet streets of Pushkar. Post breakfast, a pre-booked transfer to the Ajmer railway station or Jaipur International Airport ensures that departures are smooth and stress-free, allowing guests to carry home only memories.
